"Starting Anew... in Hadera 1949-1958"

Room I :Hadera's main street

This wing focuses on Hadera's transformation to a city, during the first decade of the state of Israel. At that time, huge temporary camps for new immigrants were stationed in and around Hadera. The city had to deal with the attendant problems of the Mass Aliyah (immigration).

Among the stores on the street is the fancy goods store where you could buy anything but food, the photographer’s study, the grocery store, and the post office.

These were times of austerity and rationing . Food and basic consumer goods were distributed to the population by means of ration books . Each month, a new allotment program was publicized . Children and pregnant women received a supplement of products.

The Post Office had an important function in those days. Many Olim (immigrants} were disconnected from their kin and the postal services were vital. Phones were rare and people used to mail letters, holiday greetings, and important notices through the post office.
